GOLF | Gaels Wrap Up NCAA Regionals in Austin

Saint Mary's played in the final round of the NCAA Regionals on Wednesday and finished 11th out of 14 teams.

AUSTIN, Texas — Saint Mary's 2018-19 season came to a close on Wednesday as they finished 11th out of 14 teams at the NCAA Regionals held at The University of Texas Golf Club. The Gaels came into their fifth straight Regionals as the No. 10 seed.

LEADERBOARD
Michael Slesinski posted the team's best result with a combined 6-over score and tied for 29th among the 75-competitor field. Saint Mary's freshmen followed close behind as Ryan Grauman shot 11-over and Ethan Ashbrook was 13-over. Rounding out the scorecard was Ethan Farnam at 14-over and Blake Hathcoat at 15-over.

Only 15 individuals shot even or below par across the tournament's three rounds.

Saint Mary's was jockeying for position on the leaderboard until the very last hole. The Gaels ended up just one stroke behind UMKC and three strokes back of San Jose State.

No. 6 Texas claimed the top spot in the tournament while blowing out the rest of the field and ending with a three-day score of 25-under. The Longhorns led second-place No. 30 TCU by 20 strokes and shot the lowest round on Wednesday at 9-under.

The other three teams who will advance to the NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. are No. 19 Clemson (1-under), No. 18 Pepperdine (6-over), and No. 7 USC (8-over). The Trojans leap frogged No. 31 Arkansas, who finished 13-over, on the final day to sneak in the championship after being on the outside looking in for the first two rounds.

Three competitors tied for medalist honors at 9-under with two of them being Longhorns. UT's Cole Hammer and Steven Chervony each shot 5-under on the final day while TCU's Stefano Mazzoli made a strong 7-under push in the last round to grab a share of the title. Julian Perico from Arkansas will advance to the NCAA Championship as an individual as he tied for sixth at 3-under.

FINAL ROUND HIGHLIGHTS

Farnam had 11 consecutive pars to end the tournament.
Ashbrook posted back-to-back birdies on 12th and 13th.
Grauman led the team with three total birdies on Wednesday.
Hathcoat and Slesinski were consistent with 15 pars each on the day.
Grauman tied for ninth on par 5 scores during the tourney at 4-under.

"It's completely different being out in this environment. We've been playing in tournaments all year leading up to this but this is a whole other level of competition. It's definitely challenging but I know we have it in ourselves to do better next year."
