LAST TIME OUT
Saint Mary's took fifth place at the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic in South Dakota last week by winning two of their three contests.
After falling to Memphis in the season opener, the Gaels earned wins against Northern Iowa and South Dakota State to wrap up the tourney. Saint Mary's had to surmount a 16-point second half deficit against UNI in order to get the win and managed to do so as Tommy Kuhse hit the game-winning go-ahead shot with 1.8 seconds remaining on the clock.
The Gaels had an easier time getting past the Jackrabbits as they sprinted to an early 22-7 lead and never looked back. Alex Ducas scored a career-high 25 points in the win and freshman Jabe Mullins added 15 in his first career start.
ABOUT NICHOLLS STATE
The Colonels are 2-1 to begin the year and will play California on Monday night before taking on the Gaels tomorrow. Nicholls State defeated UC Davis and Idaho State at the Bronco Invitational to begin their season before dropping a game to Santa Clara, 73-57.
Ty Gordon is the team's leading scorer at 16.0 ppg and has been shooting efficiently at 57 percent. Forward Najee Garvin averages close to a double-double at 11.3 points and 8.3 rebounds while senior guard Kevin Johnson dishes out over five assists per contest. The Colonels defend the perimeter well - allowing their opponents to make only 26 percent of their attempted threes this season but have been weaker on the inside allowing 58 percent on two-pointers.
The Gaels and Colonels have met just once before in 2007 and Saint Mary's walked away with a 21-point victory.
ABOUT TEXAS SOUTHERN
The Tigers are 0-2 to begin the year and have a contest against Wyoming on Monday night. TSU was edged by Washington State in Pullman to begin the year and also played Oklahoma State already as well.
Galen Alexander leads the team in scoring and was averaging 16.0 points heading into Monday's contest. 6-3 guard Michael Weathers leads the team in rebounding with eight per game and is also second in scoring. The Tigers have outrebounded their opponents in both games thus far but have struggled shooting the ball. TSU has made less than 22 percent of their 3-point attempts and are shooting only 64 percent at the charity stripe.
This will be Saint Mary's and Texas Southern's first matchup in program history.
