GOLF | Ashbrook Leads Team at Rustic Canyon

MOORPARK, Calif. — Saint Mary's will have some catching up to do during the final round of the Rustic Collegiate Classic after a tough opening day that has them in fifth place.

THE LEADERBOARD
Ethan Ashbrook led the team's efforts on Thursday and is tied for seventh at even par after 36 holes. The junior caught fire on the front nine of the middle round with a 4-under score and finished with a 3-under total for the round.

Blake Hathcoat, fresh off a first place finish in the team's last event, shot 4-over on the day and is t-14th. Like Ashbrook, his best performance came in the second round at 1-over. As a team, the Gaels improved by 20 strokes in the second round.

Ethan Farnam and Evan Peterson are both 10-over heading into Friday and Michael Slesinski is a shot behind at 11-over to round out the Gaels' lineup. Zack Missigman led the SMC individuals at 11-over and was followed by Dylan DeProsperis at 12-over and Ryan Hartanto at 15-over.

Pepperdine leads the five-team tourney with a score of 10-under, 13 strokes better than current runner up San Diego. The Toreros' Andy Xu holds the top spot on the leaderboard with 18 holes to play at 4-under. Only six of the 37 competitors have an under par total after two rounds.

FIRST AND SECOND ROUND HIGHLIGHTS

A trio of Gaels had birdies on the 315-yard par 4 third hole during the first round.
Farnam finished the day on a high note with birdies on three of the final four holes.
Slesinski improved by nine strokes in the middle round.
Ashbrook and Hathcoat didn't post worse than a par on the front nine of the second round.
Hathcoat tied for third on performances on par 3's at 1-under.
Ashbrook tied for third on the day with 24 pars.
