Gaels' all-time head to head record: 6-5 (Last meeting: 12/1/10, A, SMC 55 — #17 SDSU 69)

ABOUT THE AZTECS
San Diego State (5-1) was recently ranked No. 18 in the nation before getting knocked off by BYU in their most recent contest. SDSU won their first five games of the year with impressive wins over UCLA, Arizona State, and Pepperdine. Last year, the Aztecs went 30-2 and lost just once in conference play.

6-6 forward Matt Mitchell is the team's leading scorer after his 35 point outburst against the Cougars. Mitchell averages 16.3 points per game and has double-digit points in every game so far this season. Sharpshooter Jordan Schakel is the Aztecs' other double-digit scorer with 13.2 ppg while shooting 39 percent from beyond the arc.

Defense has long been SDSU's calling card and this year is no different. Opponents are shooting under 40 percent against the Aztecs and KenPom has San Diego State listed as the 26th best defense in the nation.

Tuesday's meeting will be the 12th all-time matchup between the Gaels and Aztecs. SMC holds a slight 6-5 edge but are 2-0 against SDSU on neutral courts. Since Randy Bennett took over in 2001, the Gaels own a 5-3 record against the Aztecs.

SUCCESS AGAINST THE MOUNTAIN WEST
Saint Mary's has won their last seven games against members of the Mountain West Conference dating back to the 2018-19 season. The team's last loss to a MWC team was a neutral site matchup against Utah State in Las Vegas (80-63, 11/19/18).

DON'T EXPECT A LOT OF OFFENSE
The game figures to be a low scoring affair as both teams rank highly in defensive efficiency and lowly in tempo. Out of 357 schools, the Aztecs rank 26th in defense and 327th in pace. Saint Mary's ranks 46th in defensive efficiency and 354th in pace.
