MBB | Slow Start Leads To Loss Against Aztecs

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Saint Mary's men's basketball team dropped a tough non-conference game against San Diego State 74-49 Tuesday night at Mott Athletics Center on the campus of Cal Poly.
The neutral site game featured two of the top programs on the West Coast. With the loss, the Gaels snapped their eight-game winning streak to fall to 8-2. San Diego State improved to 6-1 with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first half, the Aztecs came out shooting well, taking a 40-20 break into the half. In the opening 20 minutes, San Diego State shot 61-percent from the field and 5-for-9 from 3-point range. The Gaels couldn't get early shots to fall, but rallied in the final five minutes to go into the break shooting 25-percent from the field and only 2-for-11 from 3-point range.
The second half featured a back-and-forth contest, with the Gaels cutting into the Aztecs lead, midway through the half. Logan Johnson carried the offense in the half, scoring nine of his 15 points in the final 20 minutes.
Tommy Kuhse added nine points and Quinn Clinton also had six.
Saint Mary's entered the game minus its two 3-guards in Alex Ducas and Leemet Böckler who both are out due to injuries.
NUMBERS TO KNOW:
Saint Mary's will return from the holiday break with its final non-conference game of the season Wednesday, Dec. 30 against Sacramento State at University Credit Union Pavilion. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game can be seen through the WCC Network and SMCGaels.com.
