FRESNO, Calif. — Saint Mary's (1-6) wasn't able to overcome potent offensive performances from California and Cal Poly on Friday as they dropped both games in the first day of the Bulldog Classic.Â
Game 1Â
Cal 9, Saint Mary's 0 (5)
Saint Mary's had a tough time getting the offense kickstarted in their morning game as they were only able to muster up one hit and two total baserunners against Cal. Bears' junior pitcher Chloe Romero threw the complete game shutout while striking out seven.Â
Hannah Chew broke up the no-hitter by Romero in the final inning with a double to center field for the Gaels' lone hit of the game. Earlier in the contest, Jayda Alaan also reached base on a hit by pitch.Â
After scoring two runs in the third, Cal was able to take a big lead with a six-run fourth. In total, the Golden Bears tallied 12 hits.Â
Kayla Scott earned the start in the circle and went 2.1 innings before Vanessa Richie entered in relief and threw the final 2.2 frames. Richie struck out two batters in her relief appearance.Â
Game 2
Cal Poly 8, Saint Mary's 4
The Gaels put together 10 hits against the Mustangs but ultimately fell 8-4 in their second game of the day.Â
Three different Saint Mary's players had multi-hit games with
Maddie Gallagher,
Indya Smith, and
Kenedi Lopes accomplishing the feat. All three Gaels had two singles in the losss.
Julia McCormack also reached base twice with a single and a walk while
Halle Sullivan had a double and an RBI.Â
SMC scored four runs in the final four innings but unfortunately were playing catchup after the Mustangs scored three times in the bottom of the first. Cal Poly would tack on three more in the bottom of the sixth after the Gaels cut their lead down to two.Â
Eileen Perez got the start in the circle for Saint Mary's and went 3.2 innings before Scott entered in relief to finish the game.Â
