MORAGA, Calif. – The Gaels will leave for their first road trip of the season this weekend as they look to face off against Hawaii and Stanford.
SCOUTING REPORT
The Gaels had a tough start to their season last weekend as they dropped both matches against Cal and Grand Canyon. SMC was swept by the Golden Bears, followed by a 3-2 loss against the Lopes. Coming up, the Gaels will play a doubleheader on Saturday as they face off against Hawaii at 9:00 a.m. followed by an 11:00 a.m. start against Stanford. Last season, Saint Mary's posted a record of 20-9 and then went 9-2 in West Coast conference competition. The Gaels went 3-2 at the WCC Championships as they defeated Portland, Santa Clara, and USF in straight sets, but fell twice to LMU, which secured third place for the Gaels.
HAWAII
The SandBows are 3-2 to start the season after a busy first weekend at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic. The team lost it's first contest against UCLA 2-3 before sweeping Stanford and then beating LSU 3-2. The SandBows ended the weekend with another sweep of Stanford. Hawaii ended the 2019 season with a record of 28-11 after making it to Day 2 of the NCAA Tournament where they fell 3-0 to USC. Last time the Gaels and the SandBows met was February 23, 2019 when Hawaii took the 4-1 win to open the season for both teams.
STANFORD
The Cardinal are 0-4 through the first weekend of competition as they were unable to win a match at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic. Stanford was swept in all four matches as they lost to LSU, Hawaii, and twice to UCLA. The team went 11-18 last season and they had a short run in the Pac-12 Championships before losing to Arizona State 3-1. The Gaels and the Cardinal met three times last season with SMC sweeping Stanford twice and winning 3-2 in the third contest. Saint Mary's has only lost to the Cardinal four times in program history.
