SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Following a sophomore season that saw him named second team All-WCC,
Carlos Lomeli is slotted to pick up right where he left off. Just announced by the West Coast Conference, Lomeli has been named as one of the five pitchers in the conference on the preseason All-WCC team.
Â
Lomeli is entering his junior season and is expected to anchor the pitching staff, something he did a great job of in 2019. He earned second-team All-WCC honors following a stellar season that saw him go 10-2 with a 3.05 earned run average across 88.1 innings pitched. He proved to be a workhorse in the rotation, going six or more innings in 9 of his starts, including a complete game shutout against Portland in April. Helping his WHIP, he walked just 13 batters and struck out 58.Â
Â
He twice picked up pitcher of the week honors: first, being named Rawlings Pitcher of the Week on April 8 and then being named WCC Pitcher of the Week on May 20. Additionally, Lomeli was recently named to D1 Baseball's Analytics: Top 150 list, ranking as the 67
th-best pitcher in the country, and second best in the WCC.
Â
"Carlos has a good feel for the ball and of the game," head coach
Greg Moore commented on Lomeli. "What makes him successful is his work between outings. He is very specific in the small goals that he sets."
Â
Lomeli has great company among pitchers on the Preseason All-WCC team, joining Nick Frasso (LMU), Alek Jacob (Gonzaga), Riley Ornido (USF), and Easton Walker (BYU). Four of the five pitchers are juniors, with Ornido being the lone senior of the bunch, and Jacob was one of the WCC pitchers to join Lomeli on the Top 150 ranking.
Â
Gonzaga and San Francisco lead the conference with three Preseason All-WCC members, with each having a pitcher and two position players. Gonzaga features infielders Brett Harris and Ernie Yake, while San Francisco sees Tyler Villaroman (OF) and Jack Winkler (INF) make the team. LMU, San Diego, and BYU all have two players represented.
Â
In the preseason poll, Saint Mary's is projected to finish seventh, a drop from their second-place finish one season ago, falling in the championship game to LMU in extra innings. Gonzaga edges out BYU and LMU for the top spot in the preseason poll, despite BYU receiving more first place votes than Gonzaga (5-2). Pepperdine and San Diego round out the top-five.
