SB | Saint Mary's Prepares For Silicon Valley Classic II This Weekend

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (6-14) will remain close to home as they travel to San Jose for the three day Silicon Valley Classic II where they will take on five different opponents. 

The Gaels will play in a doubleheader on Friday with the first game beginning at 10:30 a.m. against Utah State and the second game starting at 3:30 p.m. against San Jose State. On the second day, SMC will take on UC Santa Barbara and Saint Francis in a doubleheader with the games starting at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. Saint Mary's will play the final day of the tournament on Sunday with a single contest against Washington at 9 a.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The Gaels most recently competed in the UC Davis Capital Classic where they recorded two wins against Utah State and UCONN while going into extra innings tied at 8-8 against Sacramento State before the game was halted due to lack of sunlight. Against the Aggies, SMC put up 10 runs on 11 hits as they were led by Jayda Alaan and Maddie Gallagher who each went 3-for-4 in the game. In the matchup against the Huskies, Saint Mary's made an impressive comeback as they recorded six runs in the third inning to steal UCONN's five-run lead to secure the win.

Three different Gaels have recorded 16 hits so far this season while Halle Sullivan and Indya Smith have each tabbed 11 RBI's. Alex Casas owns the best bat on the team with a .341 batting average and a .453 on base percentage while also tallying four of her five stolen bases attempts. In the circle, both Sofia Earle and Vanessa Richie own a 2-1 record while Earle holds a 3.98 ERA.

ABOUT UTAH STATE
The Aggies are currently 9-10 overall as they just competed in the UC Davis Capital Classic alongside Saint Mary's where they picked up just two wins against Texas State and Santa Clara. Utah State has four Aggies with a batting average over .300 including Lexi Orozco (.333) who has posted 16 hits including five doubles and three home runs while also tallying 14 RBI's. In the circle, Kapri Toone is 5-1 as she owns a 1.98 ERA in 42.1 innings pitched while recording 25 strikeouts but allowing 17 walks. 

ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE
The Spartans own a 19-4 overall record with a perfect 8-0 posting at home as they just picked up their fourth loss of the season in a 3-1 decision to Pacific. Jocelyn Vidal is at the forefront of San Jose State's efforts as she holds the lone batting average above .400 at .419 with a .518 on base percentage. Suzy Brookshire has also been a key component from the box as she has tallied eight homers and 56 total bases, which is good for first in the Mountain West Conference in both categories. Shannon Haddad is leading the team from the circle as she ranks second in the conference in two categories as she owns a 1.00 ERA and has posted 79 strikeouts in 69.2 innings pitched.

ABOUT UC SANTA BARBARA
The Gauchos are 9-13 so far this year and are currently on a four-game winning streak as they defeated Bradley, Portland State and Saint Peter's twice in the 2020 Gaucho Classic. Sammy Fabian has a .449 batting average this season while posting 31 hits and recording 16 runs to lead the team. On the rubber, Emily Schuttish and Alyssa Molina each own a 3-4 record while Molina owns a 3.56 ERA in 41.1 innings pitched while recording 32 strikeouts.

ABOUT SAINT FRANCIS
The Red Flash (5-13) most recently competed in the Stanford Softball Tournament where they picked up a single victory against Rhode Island in a close 4-3 decision. Mekenzie Saban and Tayven Rousseau have each recorded 14 hits while Saban has posted two doubles, two triples, and two homers. In the circle, Grace Vesco is 3-6 with a 3.43 ERA in 47 innings pitched while seeing over 200 at bats.

ABOUT WASHINGTON
The No. 2 Huskies own a 19-2 posting as they are just coming off the Judi Garman Classic where they won four contests and only dropped one. Baylee Klinger and Taryn Atlee have both been key components for Washington as they each hold a .438 batting average while Klinger has tallied 28 hits including five home runs and four doubles with 27 RBI's. Gabbie Plain is 9-2 in the circle while recording a 3.03 ERA in 60 innings pitched and has collected 81 strikeouts.
