SAN JOSE, Calif. — Saint Mary's (6-16) played twice on Friday and ended up dropping both contests to Utah State and a tough San Jose State team to open the Silicon Valley Classic.
Game 1
Utah State 3, Saint Mary's 2
The Gaels took an early lead in the third as Maddie Gallagher ripped a single up the middle to score Halle Sullivan. After the Aggies (11-10) responded with two of their own in the frame, SMC tied things up in the top of the seventh courtesy of Kenedi Lopes' bases loaded single but Utah State answered back once again with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to walk off for the win.
Gallagher went 3-for-4 at the plate and SMC collected eight total hits in the loss, all singles. USU only had seven hits but two went for extra bases.
Sofia Earle pitched well in her start as she went 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned run. The sophomore struck out six and surrendered only five hits to get a no decision. Alissa Noble threw a complete game for Utah State and struck out eight.
Game 2
San Jose State 5, Saint Mary's 1
Four runs in the fourth proved to sink the Gaels in the final game of the day as San Jose State (21-4) took the contest with a 5-1 final.
Hannah Chew went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored while Gallager also went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the first. The Gaels had trouble getting much going against Spartans starter Caroline Bowman as they pieced together just five hits in the ballgame.
Three extra base hits in the fourth would provide the fuel for SJSU's rally and then the Spartans added one more insurance run with a bases loaded walk in the fifth. San Jose State recorded nine total hits.
The Gaels used four pitchers in the game with Eryn McCoy closing things out with a scoreless 1.2 frames. Kayla Scott went three innings and allowed two runs in her start.
UP NEXT: DAY 2
Saint Mary's will face UC Santa Barbara and St. Francis tomorrow in the second day of the tournament. The 9 a.m. contest versus UCSB will be played at San Jose State while the second 1 p.m. game will take place on the campus of Santa Clara.
