BASE | Giosso Hits First Homer of Season in Thursday's Loss

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (4-8) dropped the first game of the weekend series against Seton Hall on Thursday as they fell 6-1.

CRUISIN' CARLOS
Carlos Lomeli tallied his fourth start of the year on Thursday against the Pirates when he pitched 7.1 innings for his longest outing of the season. The junior recorded three strikeouts in the contest while only allowing seven hits and gave up just one run. Lomeli posted six scoreless innings and only gave up one double. The La Habra native has been a key component for Saint Mary's pitching success so far as he has tallied 21 punchouts this year while only giving up a single intentional walk.

OFFENSE GOES QUIET
Saint Mary's recorded a low hitting day as they only put up five hits in the game compared to Seton Hall with 10. Gabe Giosso led the team from the box as he went 2-for-3 on the day and launched his first home run of the season to give the Gaels' their first run of the contest. Jacob Talamante struck first in the game as he nailed the first single of the day for his third hit in the last two games. Rounding out the hits for SMC was Austin Elder and Kyle Velazquez who each notched singles in the matchup.

BULLPEN BLUES
The Gaels made good use of their bullpen on Thursday as they entered three right-handed pitchers in the final two innings. Nathan Schneider entered the contest in the eighth for just one pitch and gave up a single run before Jackson Hulett came in to relieve him. Hulett would allow three hits in the inning but recorded two strikeouts while on the mound. Following Hulett's appearance, Ryan Taurek pitched the top of the ninth in relief to close out the contest and he would strike out two batters in one-two-three fashion.

UP NEXT
The Gaels will host Seton Hall for the final two games of the series on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.
