SB | Seniors Chew, McCoy to Return Next Season

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's softball head coach Sonja Garnett and her staff are pleased to announce the return of two seniors to next year's team, Hannah Chew and Eryn McCoy. The two students-athletes are among 14 SMC seniors who will be welcomed back and have their scholarship renewed for a fifth season in light of the COVID-19 situation as stated earlier today in a release from Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, Mike Matoso.

"We are grateful that the NCAA provided this opportunity and that Mike Matoso has worked to make this a reality at Saint Mary's," said Garnett. "We cannot wait to hit the field and see these two compete again."

Chew has been the team's primary catcher for essentially all four years while in Moraga. After making 34 starts as a freshman, the backstop started in 40 or more games in both of her sophomore and junior campaigns. In a shortened season this year, Chew sat out in only one contest and was fourth on the team with a .264 batting average. The Santa Rosa, Calif. native will once again anchor the Gaels' pitching staff in 2021 and look to build upon the team's improved performance in the circle shown this year.

McCoy will pair up with Chew to create a formidable battery for Garnett next year after ranking second in ERA on the team in 2020. While limited to only 19.1 innings as a senior, McCoy showed why she was an All-WCC Honorable Mention the year prior with multiple scoreless outings in addition to surrendering only one run over five and a third innings against a tough California team on Feb. 19. Not only is she a key cog in the Gaels rotation, McCoy has also been utilized in the field and as a pinch runner throughout her career. She collected seven at-bats this year and went 1-for-3 at the dish against No. 2 Washington.
