BERKELEY, Calif. — Saint Mary's (0-1) finally returned to the court on Thursday after a long layoff due to the coronavirus but came up short to No. 19 California (1-0) on the road. 

The Gaels came close to taking matches on courts 1 and 3 during doubles play with 7-5 and 6-4 scores, respectively. Mariia Kozyreva and Danielle McIntyre put up a valiant effort against the No. 53 duo of Anna Bright and Julia Rosenqvist as the Gaels' No. 1 tandem by forcing 12 games in their match. 

No. 17 Kozyreva picked up SMC's only singles win, albeit a very impressive win, over No. 26 Valentina Ivanov. The senior defeated her opponent in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-3 score on court 1. Aubane Ville was edged on court 6 by her opponent Erin Richardson in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 0-6. 

The Gaels return to play on Feb. 6 at USC. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
