MBB | Gaels Outlast USF in the City as Johnson Scores 20

SAN FRANCISCO — Saint Mary's starting backcourt scored 38 points and the Gaels (11-5, 2-3 WCC) outlasted a late San Francisco (10-8, 4-4 WCC) push to win their second conference game on the road and sweep the week.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Logan Johnson had a dominant offensive game with 20 points on 10-of-15 shooting with four rebounds and three assists to boot. It was the junior's second most single-game points and was just six fewer than the career-best he set two weeks ago versus Santa Clara.

Tommy Kuhse posted 18 points and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line while Dan Fotu added 11 more for his third straight double-digit scoring game. Matthias Tass (9 pts/7 rebs) and Kyle Bowen (7 pts/9 rebs) each came close to double-doubles.

Saint Mary's had one of their best offensive halves of the season during the first half and were up 42-29 at the break. SMC took an early lead and slowly crept ahead by seven at the 8-minute mark. The Gaels then went on an 8-0 run, with four of those points scored by Kuhse at the free throw line, to pull ahead by 15, their largest lead of the game.

Bowen hit a triple right before the break to put SMC up 13 going into the locker room. Saint Mary's shot 67 percent during the first half and were 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Kuhse led all players in the opening 20 minutes with 12 points while Johnson added 10.

USF answered back quickly with four 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the second half to cut SMC's lead all the way down to one. The Gaels responded with an 8-0 run of their own, including six straight points by Johnson, to pull ahead once again by nine.

San Francisco refused to quit however and managed to whittle down the Gaels' lead once again. With 2:28 remaining, Jamaree Bouyea made a layup to make it a 1-point game.

After a 4-0 run by the Gaels, it became a game of fouls and free throws for Saint Mary's. Kuhse made both of his attempts with eight seconds remaining as did Quinn Clinton with two seconds to ice the win.

Bouyea led the Dons with a game-high 21 points.
