SALT LAKE CITY — Just days before the start of the 2021-22 NBA season, the Utah Jazz announced the signing of former Gael great Malik Fitts to a two-way contract. Per Utah Jazz team policy, terms of the deal were not released at the time of the signing.
Fitts appeared in three games with the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2020-21 season, but saw the bulk of his action in the NBA G League, appearing in 14 games with the Agua Caliente Clippers. During that stretch of action, Fitts averaged 11.1 points per game, with 4.0 rebounds per game and 1.4 assists per game.
His performance in limited time during the preseason with the Jazz was enough to earn himself a two-way contract with Utah, appearing in four games and averaging 11.8 minutes per game. He shot 45.5% from the field en route to 3.8 points per game, and was knocking down threes at an 83.3% clip.
Fitts was a shining star with the Saint Mary's Gaels from 2018-20, spending two seasons in Moraga and landing on the All-WCC Team twice. He averaged 15.9 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 1.3 SPG, and 1.1 APG as a Gael in 68 games (66 starts). After being named Second Team All-WCC as a sophomore, Fitts was named First Team All-WCC in 2020 as the Gaels reached the WCC Championship game.
Fitts joins former Gaels Patty Mills and Jock Landale as active players in the NBA. The first time Fitts would have a chance to go up against a former Gael would be December 17, when the Jazz host Landale and the San Antonio Spurs.
