PALO ALTO, Calif. - Mariia Kozyreva has advanced to the semifinals of the Women's Open Singles bracket at the ITA Northwest Regionals hosted by Stanford.
No. 3 Kozyreva defeated Sarah-Maude Fortin of Washington 6-1, 6-1 on Monday to advance to Tuesday's semifinal match, where she will take on No. 2 seed Connie Ma of Stanford. Back in late September Kozyreva lost to Ma at the KPSF Open San Francisco Championships, a pro event that college players are eligible for.
Before that loss though, Kozyreva defeated the No. 1 seed, Sai-Sai Zheng from China, at the KPSF Open who was ranked No. 75 in the world at the time and has been ranked as high as 34th. It will be a chance for Kozyreva to avenge that three-set loss to Ma who has lost only two games per match on average through her first five collegiate matches.
It was the tandem of Ma and Angelica Blake that ended the doubles run of Kozyreva and
Jocelyn Massey 8-6 on Monday.
Jordan Harris and
Julia Ronney did advance another round to the semifinals of the doubles bracket by defeating Allison Mulville and Sophie Luescher of Oregon 8-2. They were upended in the semis by Niluka Madurawe and Alexandra Yepifanova of Stanford 8-6, capping a great run by Gaels doubles tandem.
