LAST TIME OUT
Saint Mary's served as the host of the 2021 WCC Championship and received a fifth-place finish from the men and a sixth-place finish for the women.
In a crowded field with four BYU runners at the top, Nolan Dozier was able to push his way through to the top of the pack to pace SMC. He was one of 13 runners who finished the 8k race in under 24 minutes, ending up with a time of 23:59.2. This marked the second-straight finish with a sub-24 time for the Morgan Hill native, who placed 13th overall in the WCC Championship. At the first kilometer, Dozier was back in 22nd, but worked his way up to ninth by the 5k-mark. For comparison, Dozier finished in 40th place in February at the 2020 WCC Championship. This earned Dozier All-WCC Second Team honors for the first time in his decorated career.
Expectations were high for the Gaels top runner on the women's side, Rayna Stanziano. Throughout the championship race, she found herself in the front pack, contending for the lead. As the temperature started to climb, her pace fell off a bit and she wound up finishing the 6k race in 21st overall with a time of 21:27.6. She wound up finishing just six spots shy of her first All-WCC appearance, but she made quite the mark during the early portions of the race, where she was as high as eighth place at the halfway mark.
ABOUT THE REGIONAL
The top two teams in both races will automatically advance to the NCAA Championships in Tallahassee, Fla. on November 20. The remaining teams will be eligible for one of 13 at-large berths which will be handed out by the committee. The four highest individuals outside of the advancing teams will also earn invitations to the NCAA Championship.
Oregon enters the meet as the highest ranked women's team in the West Region. The Ducks recently placed third at the Pac-12 Championships and had the best finish among teams in the region. Washington, which was fourth in the meet, is ranked second in the West and is followed by Gonzaga, Stanford and Portland in the top five. The men's rankings have a similar look as Stanford, Washington, Oregon and Gonzaga occupy the top four sports. The Cardinal placed second at the Pac-12 Championships to maintain their top spot in the poll. Boise State completes the top five.
