12/12/2021 4:43:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Raleigh, N.C. – The Saint Mary's Women's Basketball Team found themselves down early to the No. 2 team in the country, NC State Wolfpack, and couldn't climb out of the deficit in a 101-73 loss on Saturday afternoon.
WOLFPACK STARTS FAST
The Gaels scored the first basket of the game on a Jade Kirisome layup, but that would be their only lead of the contest. However, it was still tie game at 7-7 halfway through the quarter after a Makena Mastora three pointer with 4:24 to go in the opening frame. But from there the Wolfpack would go on an 18-0 run on route to a 25-7 lead after one quarter of play.
SECOND HALF SURGE
The Gaels were down 50-25 at the half but found their footing in the third quarter, outscoring the Wolfpack 22-21 in the third. They had their highest-scoring quarter in the fourth, racking up 26 points, but couldn't slow down the high-scoring attack of the Wolfpack. Though it was great to see the Gaels be able to hang in a back-and-forth affair with NC State in the second half, they weren't able to trim into the deficit from the first.
TOP PERFORMERS
Jade Kirisome led the Gaels with 17 points and had five rebounds, one short of her career high in both categories. Ali Bamberger was one rebound short of her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and nine rebounds. It was the third time this season she's come up one rebound short of a double-double. Bamberger tied for the team lead in assists with three, joining Mastora who also had three assists and set a career high in points with 11.
UP NEXT
The Gaels will head south from Raleigh to Conway, S.C. and take on Coastal Carolina University on Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time.
