SB | Gaels Walk Off on Nevada, Split Doubleheader

MORAGA, Calif. — In the second game of Thursday's doubleheader, Saint Mary's (1-1) rallied in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off on Nevada (1-1) and split the season opener series.

GAME 1 RECAP
Nevada 6, Saint Mary's 2

A pair of RBI singles in the top of the second for the Wolfpack would give them a 3-0 lead they would never relinquish. The Gaels cut down the deficit to just one in the fourth as Eryn McCoy drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch and Sasa Koria followed suit with a walk but could not tack on any additional runs.

Nevada scored three more runs off of singles in the top of the fifth to pad their lead.

The Gaels picked up just three hits in the season opener with Indya Smith leading the way with a 2-for-3 game. Senior backstop Hannah Chew had the other base knock for SMC.

Sofia Earle entered in relief in the second inning and threw 2.2 innings. Of the eight outs the lefthander recorded, seven came via the strikeout.

GAME 2 RECAP
Saint Mary's 2, Nevada 1

Neither team provided much offense in the second game of the day as they combined for a total of just five hits. One of Nevada's hits came in the third as Sadaria McAlister drove in a run with a 2-out RBI single to put her team up 1-0.

SMC had earned just one base hit through the first six innings of play but were not discouraged heading into the final frame. After a quick out, the Gaels received a gift from the Wolfpack as Maddie Gallagher reached base safely on a fielding error by the shortstop. A fielder's choice would bring Saint Mary's down to their final out with freshman Marissa Montelongo coming to the dish.

The 9-hole hitter Montelongo had a great at bat against Nevada's starter Blake Craft and worked a full count walk after seeing 10 pitches at the plate. Fellow freshman Marissa Nishihara capitalized on the first pitch as the Gaels' next batter and shot a single into centerfield to chase home pinch runner Bry Waters and tie the game up at one.

Jayda Alaan was next up to bat for SMC and crushed a 1-0 fastball over the head of the Wolfpack center fielder and off the fence to score Montelongo and give the Gaels an exciting first win of the year. The base hit for Alaan couldn't have come at a better time as just minutes later, rain began to pour down on Cottrell Field.

Earle pitched a complete game for Saint Mary's and struck out six while surrendering only two hits and one earned run. For the day, the junior had 13 strikeouts across 9.2 innings.

UP NEXT: SACRAMENTO STATE
