SACRAMENTO, Calif. — After dropping the first contest of Saturday's doubleheader, Saint Mary's bounced back and defeated Sacramento State 6-3 in the second game to improve to 2-2 this season.
GAME 1 RECAP
Sacramento State 8, Saint Mary's 0 (6)
The first game of the doubleheader ended in the bottom of the sixth as the Hornets scored four runs to enact the run-rule. Sac State had scored three in the third and one more in the fifth to total eight runs.
The Gaels had four hits in the contest with Marissa Montelongo picking up half of those in a 2-for-2 game. The freshman also had a stolen base for SMC, their only swipe of the game.
Sofia Earle started in the circle for the Gaels and went five innings. The lefty surrendered four earned runs but struck out six Hornets. Marissa Bertuccio went the distance for SAC and struck out three for her second win of the year.
GAME 2 RECAP
Saint Mary's 6, Sacramento State 3
The Gaels got on the board first in the latter game as Jayda Alaan ripped a triple down the right field line to score Marissa Nishihara in the top of the first. Alaan drove in a run in the following inning as well with a bases loaded walk and Hannah Chew followed suit with a two-run single to left.
Saint Mary's stretched their lead to 5-0 in the third as Indya Smith crushed a solo home run over the right field fence. The long ball was the Gaels' first of the season and second of Smith's career.
Sac State responded with a run in the bottom of the frame but Smith would put SMC back up by five in the top of the fifth with a RBI single that scored Alaan. Smith, Alaan, and Chew all had two RBIs in the game.
Eryn McCoy picked up her first win of the season with 4.2 innings pitched. McCoy struck out five and scattered six hits in the contest. Kayla Scott pitched the final two-and-a-third innings for Saint Mary's and gave up only one hit.
UP NEXT: SAC STATE
Saint Mary's will face the Hornets once again next weekend in Moraga. The teams will face off in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon.
