MSOC | Gaels Open Season With Win over Pacific in Double Overtime

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's took the pitch for the first time in 451 days on Wednesday and got their 2021 spring season off to a good start by picking up a non-conference win over Pacific (0-2-0) in double overtime.

The only score of the game came in the second overtime session on a penalty kick by Sebastian Schacht. Freshman Andrew Rotter dribbled into the box and was dragged down by a Pacific defender to earn the kick. The junior Schacht then fired a perfect strike to the far left side, opposite of the leaping Tigers' goalkeeper, to seal the win for SMC.

Saint Mary's is now 23-2-5 in their home stadium since 2017, good for a win percentage of .850.

The Gaels outshot Pacific 17-11 in the match and had six shots on goal. Saint Mary's especially poured it on during the second half as they outshot the Tigers 12-4 in the period. Boyd Curry, Lucas Andrews, and David Brog all had three shots to lead the team.

SMC also had the better of corner kick opportunities, 4-3.

Senior Nicholas Lapinid picked up his first career win in his first career start in net for the Gaels. The Simi Valley, Calif. native made four saves to earn the clean sheet.

The affair was mostly defensive with neither team getting many grade-A scoring chances. Saint Mary's looked to have scored in the 62nd minute as Curry got a head on a set piece cross from Schacht and directed it into the back of the net but the play was whistled offside.

A number of Gaels made their collegiate debuts in the match. Of the team's 14 freshmen, Louis Sterobo, Christian Engmann, and Cade Cowan started for Saint Mary's while Andre Hoglin, Rotter, Tyler Hardin, and Timothy Stephens saw time coming off the bench.

UP NEXT: SANTA CLARA
