SB | Saint Mary's Edged By Cal, 5-4

BERKELEY, Calif. — Saint Mary's led late in their Sunday game with Cal but the Golden Bears rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal a win.

After Cal scored a first inning run, Saint Mary's took the lead with two runs in the second. The first three batters of the inning reached safely for SMC and then Maddie Gallagher was hit by the pitch to plate a run. Saint Mary's pulled away 2-1 as the next batter Holly Lusk reached on an error by the second baseman that allowed Julia McCormack to cross the dish. A lineout and two ground ball outs would end the inning for SMC and leave three runners on base however.

The Gaels added their lead in the fourth as Marissa Montelongo recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice and then came across to score on a Jayda Alaan single to right field.

Saint Mary's led Cal 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh. Gaels' starter Sofia Earle quickly got two outs but then Candace Yingling delivered a two-run homer on a full count to tie the score. The Bears' next batter walked on a full count and then Cal scraped together three consecutive singles to bring in the winning run.

The Gaels collected six hits in the game. Marissa Nishihara went 2-for-3 at the top of the lineup and also drew a walk. Sofia Earle went 6.2 innings in the circle and struck out six batters in the loss.

Saint Mary's returns to the field on Wednesday for a doubleheader at UC Davis. More information and links for the game can be found on the team's schedule page.
