SB | Gaels Earn Win Over Aggies in Doubleheader

DAVIS, Calif. — Saint Mary's split their Wednesday doubleheader on the road against the Aggies to improve to 5-4 this year.

GAME 1 RECAP
Saint Mary's 4, UC Davis 0

Kayla Scott was the player of the game for SMC as she threw a complete game shutout in the circle. The sophomore struck out five Aggies and scattered seven hits in her first career shutout.

Saint Mary's got on the board in the third inning thanks to a two-out rally off the bats off the Marissa freshmen. Marissa Nishihara managed to sneak a single into right field with two down to push Julia McCormack to first and then Marissa Montelongo drove in the run with a well placed bunt.

The Gaels scored their next three runs in the following inning. After two singles and a sacrifice bunt began the frame, Angelina Franco also laid down a squeeze bunt to plate a run and reach base safely. Holly Lusk then delivered a bloop double to right field to drive in two runs with the bases loaded and give the Gaels a comfortable four-run lead.

SMC totaled eight hits in the win. Nishihara went 2-for-4 at the plate as did Jayda Alaan who also had a double.

GAME 2 RECAP
UC Davis 4, Saint Mary's 3

The Gaels scored three unanswered runs late in the second game of the doubleheader to make things interesting but ultimately came up short of a comeback win.

In the top of the sixth, SMC trailed 4-0 but began to rally with back-to-back singles to start the inning. Following a batter interference call for an out, Alaan struck a single to center field to score a run and would move to second base on the throw. With two runners in scoring position, cleanup hitter Hannah Chew laid down yet another squeeze bunt for SMC to plate a run and reach on the single. Indya Smith followed suit with another bunt to score Alaan and make it a one-run game.

Saint Mary's unfortunately went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Eileen Perez got the start for SMC and pitched a scoreless first three innings before a barrage of singles would open things up for the Aggies. UCD scored all four runs in the fourth on seven innings and scored three of their runs with two outs.

The Gaels used a total of five pitchers in the game. Sofia Earle pitched the final inning for Saint Mary's and struck out two batters.

SMC had nine hits in the contest with Alaan, Chew, and Franco all picking up multiple hits. The Gaels struck out only three times in the game.
