
GOLF | Gaels Finish Third at Nick Watney

FRESNO, Calif. — Saint Mary's had another solid day at Sunnyside Golf Course and finished the Nick Watney Invitational in third place with a combined score of 24-under par.
LEADERBOARD
The Gaels posted the fourth lowest score of the day at 6-under to claim third place in the 9-team field. Blake Hathcoat and Evan Peterson tied for seventh on the medalist leaderboard at 7-under to lead the team. Peterson posted the Gaels' lowest total of the day at 3-under.
Ethan Farnam shot 2-under on Tuesday to wrap up t-13th, Ethan Ashbrook finished one stroke behind to tie for 15th, and Dylan VanderVeer was just one stroke back of Ashbrook to finish t-21st. The team's lone individual, Michael Slesinski, was 3-under overall during the tournament and also finished tied for 15th place.
BYU took the event by shooting 15-under in the final round -- far and away the best score of the day. The Cougars were 31-under during the tourney and were trailed by Loyola Marymount at 28-under.
BYU's Carson Lundell and LMU's Gavin Cohen each shot 13-under across the three rounds to share medalist honors. The full leaderboard can be seen here.
The third place finish marked the Gaels' second best result this season and their best finish relative to the field size. SMC finished second out of four teams at the La Purisima College Invite during the fall.

- Saint Mary's will have a whole month off before returning to the course on Mar. 8 for the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic held in Chula Vista, Calif. The tournament spans three days and will be played at San Diego Country Club.
