SB | Incredible Late Rally Leads to Win Over Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. — Saint Mary's (7-10) pulled off one of the most incredible comebacks in program history in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader to split the two-game set with Stanford on the road.

GAME 1 RECAP
Stanford 9, Saint Mary's 0 (5)

The first game of the doubleheader came to an early end as Stanford scored four in the first, two in the second, and three more in the third to ultimately win by run rule.

The Gaels had three hits in the five-inning game with Jayda Alaan, Hannah Chew, and Alex Casas all picking up singles.

Kayla Scott started for SMC and Eryn McCoy pitched in relief. McCoy struck out four batters in her four innings of relief.

GAME 2 RECAP
Saint Mary's 12, Stanford 8

Down to their final three outs, Saint Mary's came to bat in the top of the seventh down 7-2 in the final game of the afternoon. The Gaels had picked up only two hits in the ballgame through the first six innings but quickly doubled that total as Casas and Indya Smith began the frame with back-to-back singles.

The rally continued as the next two Gaels were hit by pitches to make it a 7-3 game, load the bases with no outs, and bring the tying run to bat. Marissa Nishihara delivered for SMC by cracking a double to deep left center on the first pitch of her at bat to clear the bases and cut the deficit down to just one. The freshman also advanced to third on throw home to move into prime scoring position.

Saint Mary's went into their bag of tricks as the next batter Holly Lusk laid down a squeeze bunt that allowed the speedy Nishihara to race home and beat the flip throw to tie the game.

Stanford made their second pitching change of the inning and brought in their ace Alana Vawter, who threw three shutout innings in Game 1, in an attempt to stop the bleeding but Saint Mary's scoring parade continued to march on. Chew and Angelina Franco had back-to-back singles and then two more Gaels scored on a fielder's choice to make it an 11-7 game. Sasa Koria gave Stanford the final blow with an RBI single up the middle for the team's seventh hit and 10th run of the inning.

Stanford scored one run in the top of the seventh but reliever Eileen Perez managed to get a strikeout and fielder's choice to end the threat and complete the comeback win for Saint Mary's. The right-hander earned her first win of the season after throwing 3.2 innings of one-run ball.

It was a total team effort on offense for SMC as only one player (Smith) had more than one hit in the contest. The Gaels had nine hits recorded five hit by pitches in the win. Nishihara led the team with three RBIs while Lusk totaled two.

UP NEXT: SAN DIEGO STATE
Saint Mary's will look to keep their momentum rolling this weekend as they travel down to SoCal for a three-game series with SDSU beginning Saturday. Links for the games can be found on the Gaels' schedule page.
