SB | Pitching Impresses Against San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Saint Mary's (8-11) pitchers gave up just two runs across two games on Saturday as the Gaels split their doubleheader with San Diego State (11-5).

GAME 1 RECAP
San Diego State 1, Saint Mary's 0

The first game of the day proved to be a pitching battle as both offenses combined for just five hits in the game. Alex Casas had the lone hit for SMC while Jayda Alaan and Hannah Chew both reached on walks.

Eileen Perez started in the circle for the Gaels and threw a complete game. The senior gave up only four hits and her only blemish was an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the sixth that would prove to be the game-winning run for the Aztecs.

The Gaels best scoring chance in the contest came in the first inning thanks to two base on balls but SDSU's starter Maggie Balint managed to work out of the inning with a groundout.

GAME 2 RECAP
Saint Mary's 2, San Diego State 1

The late afternoon meeting between the two teams proved to be yet another pitching duel with only three scored in the contest.

Saint Mary's had three base hits in the game but scored both of their runs in the sixth without recording a base knock. The Aztecs' defense made three consecutive errors to open the inning to allow both runs to cross. With runners on second and third, Chew stroked a ball to left field which was misplayed by SDSU's left fielder and allowed Alaan and Indya Smith to score.

Sofia Earle had a gem of a game on the rubber for SMC with a one-run complete game for her third win of the season. The lefty struck out six, gave up three hits, and scattered five walks to silence San Diego State's bats.

SDSU managed to rally in the bottom of the seventh and loaded the bases with two outs but Earle induced a groundout to end the game.
