SB | Saint Mary's Falls in Extras to SDSU

SAN DIEGO — Saint Mary's came out swinging on Sunday and scored eight runs in the first inning but a pesky San Diego State squad managed to tie things up late and ultimately win in nine innings, 9-8.

After scoring just two runs in yesterday's doubleheader, the Gaels' offense was scorching hot to begin the game. After two batters reached base safely, Hannah Chew put SMC on the board with a two-run single up the middle.

A few batters later, Julia McCormack cracked another single up the middle with the bags full to score two more and make it a 4-0 game. The Gaels added three more runs on two singles and a wild pitch before Jayda Alaan capped the inning with an RBI double to score Marissa Nishihara. In total, 11 Gaels batted in the inning and totaled eight hits.

SDSU fought back however with a single run in the second and then six more in the third to make it 8-7. A throwing error with two outs would hurt SMC in the inning as the Aztecs scored five unearned runs in the frame after the error.

San Diego State tacked on one more in the fifth to send the game to extras. In the bottom of the ninth, SDSU managed a walk with two outs and then two singles would ultimately win the game after three hours and 42 minutes of softball.

Nishihara, Alaan, Indya Smith, and Alex Casas all had multi-hit games for SMC and the team totaled 12 hits overall. McCormack reached base three times as well with her single and two walks.
