WSOC | Saint Mary's Drops Close Match to Bulldogs, 1-0

SPOKANE, Wash. — Saint Mary's traveled to the Pacific Northwest to face one of the top teams in the conference on Saturday but came up short to Gonzaga in a close 1-0 loss.

Gonzaga (6-2, 4-1 WCC) scored the only goal of the match in the 61st minute on a penalty kick. After the Gaels were whistled for a foul along the end line, GU's Sofia Braun deposited her shot into the right side netting for the game-winner.

Saint Mary's (1-4-2, 1-3-1 WCC) took six shots in the match with four coming on net. Taylour Mendoza led the team with three attempts in 68 minutes played. All six of SMC's shots came in the final 45 minutes of the match.

Maya Alcantara had the play of the game for SMC as in the 61st minute she booted a would-be goal off the Gaels' goal line to keep the game scoreless. Unfortunately for Saint Mary's, GU managed to score after the ensuing corner kick.

Five different Gaels played the full 90 minutes including goalkeeper Taylor Poland who made three stops.
