MSOC | Offense Remains Hot in 3-1 Win Over Dons

MORAGA, Calif. — No. 23 Saint Mary's unbeaten streak continued this weekend as they knocked off San Francisco 3-1 in West Coast Conference action. SMC is now 5-0-1 overall, 3-0-1 in league play, and 18-0-4 in their last 22 WCC matches.

Christian Engmann put the Gaels on the board first in the 19th minute following a corner kick. After a scramble in the box, the freshman took a close range shot that the Dons' goalkeeper Reuben Stuiver blocked but Engmann tapped in the rebound for the easy score. It was the first career goal for the defender.

Saint Mary's took a 1-0 lead into halftime but doubled that lead just minutes into the second half. In the 49th minute, Engmann tossed a long throw-in into the USF penalty box and Boyd Curry managed to get his head on the pass to knock it off the left post and in.

It was the second straight game that Curry has scored for Saint Mary's and he now co-leads the team with five points on the season.

San Francisco did not go quietly however as their forward Nonso Adimabua responded with a breakaway score in the 62nd minute to make it a one-goal game.

The score remained 2-1 for the next 20-plus minutes as play progressively became more and more chippy and ultimately culminated in a red card for the Dons in the 84th minute. Less than a minute later, SMC managed to take advantage of USF being down a man and drew a foul in the box to set up a penalty kick.

Sebastian Schacht took the kick for the Gaels and his shot went right while Stuiver guessed left. The goal for Schacht was his second of the year, both coming on PKs, and iced the win for SMC. The goal marked the second consecutive game the Gaels have put three balls in the back of the net.

Saint Mary's offense dominated the game at times as the Gaels took 18 shots compared to 11 for USF. SMC also took nine corners compared to just one for the Dons.

The game was highly physical and both teams were called for numerous penalties in the match. The Gaels were whistled for 19 fouls and a total of four yellow cards and two reds were assessed in the match. Both reds came in the final seven minutes of play.

Nicholas Lapinid started in goal once again for Saint Mary's and made three saves to earn the win.
