WSOC | Gaels Defeat Portland 1-0 For Historic Win

PORTLAND — Saint Mary's traveled to the Pacific Northwest this weekend to take on Portland and emerged victorious on Saturday with a 1-0 win. The Gaels improved to 3-4-3 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play, marking the first time since 2017 that SMC has won three or more WCC contests.

With the win, Saint Mary's now has a chance to complete the season with four conference wins under first year head coach Theresa Romagnolo if they take next week's contest against Loyola Marymount. A victory would represent the first time since 2001 that SMC has won four or more WCC matches.

Regardless of next week's result, the Gaels have secured their best performance in league play since the 2003 season when they went 3-2-2.

Saint Mary's only took four shots in the match but had the one that mattered the most in the 11th minute. Portland (3-3-3, 2-3-3 WCC) held possession deep in their own half and tried to cross it across the pitch but Kyllie Glock intercepted the pass, took a few touches, and fired a shot low left to beat the Pilots' goalkeeper. It was Glock's first goal this season and second of her career.

Despite getting outshot 10-4 in the match, the Gaels limited Portland's scoring chances as UP took just one shot on goal. SMC had two shots on goal, the other coming off the foot of Taylour Mendoza, and also had more corners than the Pilots, 4-3.

Taylor Poland picked up her third clean sheet of the season by making one save in goal for Saint Mary's.

The goal by Glock was significant as it marked the first goal scored by a Portland opponent since Feb. 27. UP had posted shutouts in their six previous matches before facing the Gaels.

UP NEXT: SENIOR DAY
Saint Mary's will look to make history next Saturday when they host LMU in Moraga. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
