SB | Hot Start Not Enough to Take Down Cougars

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's offense put up big numbers in the first three innings of their West Coast Conference opener against BYU but the Cougars would fight back with crooked numbers in back-to-back frames to take the series opener, 10-6.

SMC plated the first run of the day in the bottom of the first. Marissa Montelongo was on first base when Indya Smith delivered a single through the right side which allowed Montelongo to take the extra bag and head to third. An errant throw from the Cougars' right fielder would let the freshman round third and head home to put the Gaels up early, 1-0.

Another BYU error in the second kept Saint Mary's inning alive and Jayda Alaan made the Cougars pay with a liner to the outfield gap to score two more and increase the Gaels' lead to 3-1.

Saint Mary's flexed their muscles in the third and tacked on three more runs off of two extra base hits. Angelina Franco started the rally by smoking the ball to the left field wall and cruised into second with an RBI double. BYU removed their starter after Franco's double but the move did not pay off immediately as the next batter, Julia McCormack, took a 1-2 pitch deep over the left field fence to give SMC a 6-1 advantage over the WCC-preseason favorite Cougars.

Unfortunately for the Gaels, BYU's bats began to heat up the very next inning and the team's five-run lead became just a one-run lead after four. In the top of the fifth, the Cougars strung together six singles and a pair of walks to score five times and take a 10-6 lead. Neither team would score for the remainder of the contest.

Alaan had a big game for the Gaels with a 3-for-4 performance at the dish as did McCormack who was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. SMC tallied nine total hits in the game compared to 15 for BYU.
