SB | Gaels Conclude 2021 Season with Win over Lions

LOS ANGELES — Saint Mary's ended the season on a high note as they won the final game of the regular season to split Saturday's doubleheader with Loyola Marymount. The Gaels concluded the year with a 13-24 overall record and 4-8 performance in conference play.

GAME 1 RECAP
Loyola Marymount 8, Saint Mary's 7

The Lions (22-21, 10-5 WCC) jumped ahead early in the game with one run in the first and four more in the second. SMC committed two errors in the second inning and all four runs were charged as unearned to reliever Kayla Scott.

The Gaels scored their first two runs of the game in the fourth on RBI singles. After Kenedi Lopes began the inning with a double, Marissa Montelongo drove her in on the 10th pitch of her at-bat with a knock through the left side. The freshman then swiped second base which allowed Indya Smith to plate her with a two-out single up the middle.

Lopes picked up her second double of the game in the next inning to drive in the team's third run. The senior connected for a hard line shot to the right center gap and scored Alyssa Vessel all the way from first to make it a 3-run game.

LMU added one more run on a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth just before the Gaels rallied to make things interesting.

In the top of the sixth, the first three batters for Saint Mary's reached base to set up Angelina Franco for a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 7-4. An error by the Lions' third baseman on a ball off the bat of Maddie Gallagher would allow one more run to score and kept the inning alive and the following hitter, Julia McCormack, delivered the big blow with a double to left center to score two and tie the game, 7-7.

The Lions responded quickly however with a walk, sacrifice bunt, and base hit to retake the lead 8-7 in the bottom of the sixth and would hang on to win by the same score.

GAME 2 RECAP
Saint Mary's 5, Loyola Marymount 2

The Lions took a 1-0 advantage in the contest in the second inning after a solo homer but their lead didn't last long as Smith tied the game in the top of the third with an RBI double. The sophomore came around to score shortly after on an RBI single off the bat of Gallagher to put SMC up.

In the top of the fourth with the score tied again 2-all, McCormack and Lopes worked walks and advanced to scoring position on a sac bunt. Montelongo was the next batter and plated both runs with a double to left to give the Gaels a 4-2 lead.

SMC crossed one more run in the sixth thanks to an error by the Lions' center fielder and the 5-2 score would remain for the rest of the game.

The Gaels only had five hits in the ballgame but also managed five walks to put plenty of runners on base. Kayla Scott earned the win in relief as she threw 4.1 scoreless frames, gave up just four hits, and struck out three.
