MORAGA, Calif. — After playing the 2020 season in the spring semester of 2021, a return to normalcy is slated for the conference and for Saint Mary's, as the Gaels and the WCC have announced their 2021 indoor volleyball schedules. SMC will play all nine teams in the conference twice, with one meeting inside UCU Pavilion, and one on the road, ultimately forming a 27-match schedule.
The Gaels begin their season by making their longest non-conference trip of the year when they head to the University of Wyoming for the annual UNIWYO Invite. SMC will play three matches over two days, beginning their season with a doubleheader against Siena and Belmont on August 27. They will get a chance to rest up and play just once on Saturday, against the hosting Cowgirls of Wyoming on Saturday, August 28.
The home opener for Saint Mary's will take place on Friday, September 3, when the Gaels welcome in San Jose State. Saint Mary's has won seven-straight against the Spartans, but have not hosted San Jose State since the 2009 season. Other home non-conference matches feature CSU Bakersfield (Sept. 10), Utah State (Sept. 11), and UC Davis (Sept. 17). The Gaels will stay local for their other non-conference matches, with contests against Sacramento State (Sept. 4) and Cal (Sept. 15).
Saint Mary's will open up conference play with four of their first five matches on the road, with three of those coming out-of-state. The Gaels begin conference play on September 23 in San Diego to take on a Toreros team that finished the season ranked inside the top-25 of the NCAA. It won't get easier as two days later they head to Provo, Utah to take on the defending champions of the conference, BYU. The second road trip for the Gaels will be up north, when they take on Gonzaga and Portland on September 30 and October 2, capping off a stretch playing five matches in 10 days.
Sandwiched in between those road trips is the first home match of the WCC season for the Gaels, when they welcome Santa Clara to UCU Pavilion on Tuesday, September 28. The Gaels will have a pair of three-match home stands during the 2021 season, with the first of those beginning on October 7 against LMU. Saint Mary's will host the Lions, followed by Pepperdine and Pacific over the course of a two-week stretch, a lighter load after their heavy beginning. The final long stretch at home concludes the regular season, when the Gaels host San Diego, BYU, and San Francisco over the final five days, ending on Tuesday, November 23.
