MORAGA, Calif. — Head Coach of Saint Mary's Women's Basketball, Paul Thomas, has announced an addition to his coaching staff, with Mariya Moore joining as the team's newest assistant coach.
"It is with great pleasure that I introduce Mariya Moore as our new women's basketball assistant coach," coach Thomas said. "We are looking forward to Mariya sharing her experiences with our current team. She brings a tremendous amount of energy to our program, as well a strong presence on the court."
Moore has enjoyed incredible success as a player during her collegiate career, beginning at Louisville and ending at USC. As a freshman guard with the Cardinals, Moore was named to the ACC All-Freshman team, as well as earning Second Team ACC honors. She landed on the All-ACC team during all three seasons at Louisville, culminating in WBCA All-American honorable mention honors as a sophomore, with 14.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game. She was selected to the Naismith Trophy Watch List three times at Louisville.
She transferred to USC after her junior season and wrapped up her collegiate career during the 2018-19 year with the Trojans, where she made the All-Pac 12 honorable mention list after averaging 13 points per game and knocking down 59 three-pointers. Arguably one of the best games of her career came as a Trojan, when she knocked down seven three-pointers en route to 36 points at Cal on January 6, 2019 in Berkeley.
Moore's tremendous success on the floor will translate well as a coach, and in particular with Saint Mary's. Her uncle, Nate Carroll Jr., played three seasons for Saint Mary's beginning in 1971, and led the team in field goal percentage at 53.1% in 1973-74. A native of Hercules, Moore is coming back to the Bay Area to work with a Gaels team that is no stranger to recent success of their own. SMC won 20+ games eight-straight seasons beginning during the 2011-12 campaign, and those seasons all included trips to the WNIT. With Moore joining the staff, she will play an instrumental role in helping the Gaels get back to that level of success during the 2021-22 season.
