2021 Maui Jim Maui Invitational Bracket

MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's College men's basketball team now knows their opening opponent of the 38^th annual Maui Jim Maui Invitational in November, as announced by the tournament today.
 
The Gaels will face Notre Dame on Monday, November 22 at the Lahaina Civic Center on ESPN2 at 8:30 p.m. (PT). This will be the first appearance for SMC in the most prestigious non-conference tournament in the country.
 
The tournament field consists of a collection of programs that boasts a combined 137 NCAA Tournament appearances, 59 Sweet Sixteen berths, and two AP Coach of the Year winners. The remaining teams are Butler, Chaminade, Houston, Oregon, Texas A&M and Wisconsin.

Notes: Saint Mary's will be making their first-ever appearance in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. This will be Notre Dame's fourth appearance in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, having last participated in 2017. During that appearance, Notre Dame went on to win the championship with a 67-66 victory over Wichita State.
 
The Gaels and Irish will be meeting for the third time in school history. Notre Dame beat Saint Mary's 70-66 at the Cow Palace in 1949 and in the last meeting in 1981, the Irish beat the Gaels 94-63 in South Bend, Ind.
 
Out of the eight teams in the field, the Gaels are the only team making their first appearance. Notre Dame is the only returning program to have earned a Maui Jim Maui Invitational championship title.
 
The eight-team bracket features a classic tournament style format. The winning team will play the winner of the Oregon-Chaminade matchup. The losing teams will also face each other, the following day.
