MBB | Gaels Cross the Bay to Take On San Francisco and Santa Clara in Pair of Premier WCC Contests

MORAGA, Calif. — …and then there were two. Following their win over Washington State and Santa Clara's loss to Gonzaga, Saint Mary's (16-2, 5-0 WCC) is one of just two remaining unbeatens in West Coast Conference play. The Gaels will now put that 5-0 conference record to the test again, as they will take on the fourth and third place teams in the conference respectively this week, the San Francisco Dons (12-7, 4-2 WCC) and Santa Clara Broncos (14-5, 5-1 WCC) in a pair of road affairs.

A TRIO OF 20s
Against Washington State last week, and for the first time since the 2013-14 season, Saint Mary's had three players score 20 points in a single game, doing so in their 88-82 win over Washington State. Joshua Dent led the charge with a career-high 26, while Paulius Murauskas chipped in 24 and Mikey Lewis dropped 20. The last time the Gaels accomplished this feat was on January 19, 2014 in a 79-73 win over Pacific. Stephen Holt scored 26 in that one, while Brad Waldow scored 22 and Kerry Carter added 21. It is almost poetic that this also happened to be the Gaels 20th consecutive home victory dating back to last season.
MORE THAN JUST A SCORER
True freshman Dillan Shaw was yet again a standout for the Gaels in their last contest, despite being limited to just three points. That's because Shaw led the Gaels with six assists without turning the ball over once. Since the start of conference play, Shaw has logged 17 assists to just two giveaways, including 12 assists and no turnovers in each of his last two contests.
ABOUT THE DONS
Picked to finish third in the preseason WCC Coaches Poll, San Francisco has shaken off a slow start to move into fourth place in the early goings of conference play, currently sitting with a 12-7 record and a 4-2 conference resume. Fourth year Head Coach Chris Gerlufsen has tallied 20+ wins in every season at the helm of the Dons, but now eyes the next goal, getting USF back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in his tenure (the Dons made the tourney in 2022, with Coach Gerlufsen as the Associate Head Coach). After graduating their top two scorers from last year, this year's Dons team has been built with a good balance of returners and transfers, as Tyrone RIley IV (12.1 PPG) and Ryan Beasley (14.2 PPG), both on last year's squad, have led the offense nicely, paired with URI transfer David Fuchs (11.9 PPG) and Oregon transfer Mookie Cook (10.1 PPG) to compliment. San Francisco leads the all-time series by a narrow 102-91 margin, but the Gaels have won 11 of the last 12 meetings.
ABOUT THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara trails both the Gaels and Gonzaga by just half a game in the WCC standings, after falling to Gonzaga last week for their first conference loss. Overall, the Broncos sit at 14-5, including wins in five of their last six. Legendary Head Coach Herb Sendek is in his 32nd year overall as a NCAA DI Head Coach, and is in year 10 with the Broncos. He is in search of his eighth straight winning season, but has yet to take the Broncos to an NCAA Tournament, with their last trip coming in 1996. Like in years past, Santa Clara basketball has once again been synonymous with high volume three point shooting, as they lead the WCC in three pointers made and attempted per game. Leading scorers Christian Hammand (16.3 PPG) and Elijah Mahi (14.7 PPG) have made up 167 of the team's 574 three point attempts, while defending WCC Co-Freshman of the Week Sash Gavalyugov has launched a team-high 96 three point attempts. Santa Clara and Saint Mary's share a long history against one another, as this will be the 245th meeting between the Gaels and Broncos dating back to the 1909-10 season. All-time, the Broncos lead 140-104, with the Gaels winning each of the last eight meetings.
