LAST TIME OUT
Saint Mary's Men's Soccer defeated the San Jose State Spartans 4-2 on Monday evening at Saint Mary's Stadium, scoring two unanswered goals in the final 11 minutes. The Gaels broke a 2-2 tie when
Louis Sterobo delivered a perfect pass from beyond the midfield stripe right to
Philippe Van der Lof just outside of the box. Van der Lof flicked the ball around the keeper who tried to beat the Gaels midfielder to the ball, and Van der Lof played it off the bounce with his right foot to put it in the back of the net in the 88
th minute for his second goal of the season and a 3-2 Gaels lead.
Â
They weren't done yet as senior
David Brog led freshman
Jack Vestberg downfield in the 89
th minute and Vestberg put one past the keeper just before time expired for his third goal of the year and a 4-2 Saint Mary's Victory.
ABOUT UC DAVIS
The Aggies are coming off their first victory of the season in a 3-0 shutout of San Diego. Though they've started the season 1-5, UC Davis Men's Soccer is coming off its first Big West Conference Tournament title and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2019, and were picked to repeat as league champions in 2021, sharing the top spot with perennial power UC Santa Barbara.
Â
Sophomore midfielder Maximilian Arfsten, junior defender Max Glasser, senior defender Jake Haupt, and senior midfielder Andy Velasquez were all named to the All-Big West preseason squad. The Gaels are 5-6-2 all time against the Aggies, including UC Davis winning their most recent match up in 2019, 4-2.
ABOUT SACRAMENTO STATE
The Hornets are looking for their first winning season overall since 2016 and are currently 1-5 on the 2021 campaign. Midfielder Oscar Govea was named to the 2021 Big West Preseason all-conference team, the league announced Wednesday. Govea, a fourth-year junior following last year's COVID-19-cancelled season, is one of Sacramento State's key returning starters on a roster that features a number of returning players. In 2019, Govea led the team in points with 12 and was tied for the team lead in goals and assists with four.
Â
The Gaels are 5-2-6 all time against the Hornets with five straight ties from 2008-2014.
