MORAGA, Calif. — For the second time this season, Matthias Tass has been named the Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the week for his performance in Saturday's game against BYU.
Tass was a standout on the court for Saint Mary's despite their loss in their first WCC game of the year. Tass recorded his first collegiate double-double by scoring 13 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, representing a career-best in boards. Eight of his 15 rebounds came on the offensive glass, and he also added four assists with three blocks. His 15 rebounds are the most by a Gael since Jordan Hunter grabbed 15 in the WCC Championship game against Gonzaga on March 12, 2019, and it is the first Gaels double-double since Tommy Kuhse in the NIT last March.
Tass is the leading scorer on this year's squad, averaging 12.6 points per game, and he leads the team in field goal percentage (60.9%) and blocks (16). Tass has scored 10+ points in nine-straight games, the longest streak of 10+ point games since Logan Johnson had 10-straight games from January 16-March 8 last year.
Saint Mary's will stay on the road for their next West Coast Conference game, which is scheduled for Thursday night against Pepperdine. The Gaels and Waves will meet for the first time this league year in Malibu, with a tip-off time scheduled for 8:00 pm. The game will be broadcast locally in the Bay Area on NBC Sports Bay Area. Saint Mary's split with Pepperdine last season, including a loss on the road on February 13 before beating the Waves in Moraga just nine days later.
