SAN MATEO, Calif. — After tying a career-best in points last week against Yale, Logan Johnson has been named the West Coast Conference's Player of the Week.
For the second game in a row, a Gael scored at least 26 points. On Tuesday against Yale, Johnson went off for 26 points (in just 27 minutes), tying a career-best that he set against Santa Clara on January 9, 2021. It was his best game in terms of efficiency as well, going 10-14 from the floor while knocking down three treys for the first time this season. Johnson also continued to be a force on defense, swiping four steals and also blocked a shot. All this helped the Gaels improve to 9-0 at home.
This marks the first award picked up for Johnson from the WCC since he was named a Preseason All-WCC selection before the start of the 2021-22 campaign. In November, Johnson was named to the All-Tournament team at the Maui Invitational, along with teammate Dan Fotu. Fotu was also named WCC Player of the Week on November 29. In conjunction with the conference award, Johnson was also named the Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week for Saint Mary's.
As they are currently scheduled, the Gaels will resume play on Thursday, January 6 against Santa Clara at the Leavey Center. The next three games are slated to be on the road for SMC, though all games are in a state of flux given the current COVID-19 situation. No teams from the WCC played their first week of conference games.
