MBB | Tass Becomes Fourth Gael to Win WCC Player of the Week
1/31/2022 10:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
SAN MATEO, Calif. — Saint Mary's Men's Basketball is on a roll, winning five-straight games in West Coast Conference play to solidify themselves in second place in the conference standings. All season long, they've been anchored by Matthias Tass in the paint, and this week he gets rewarded for his efforts. For the first time this season, Tass has been named the WCC's Player of the Week for helping lead Saint Mary's to a big 2-0 week.
No Gael was more important to SMC winning both WCC games this week than Matthias Tass, who put up one of his best weeks of the season. The senior out of Estonia recorded his fourth double-double in a five-game stretch on Thursday night as the Gaels came from 23-points back to beat USF on the road 72-70. Tass put up 27 points, tying a career-best, and grabbing 12 rebounds for the double-double, while going 9-10 from the free throw line. On Saturday, Tass again tied for the team lead in points with 16, and added six rebounds. His 43 points over two weeks are the most he has put up this season, while making 14 baskets, grabbing 18 rebounds, and going 15-16 from the charity stripe.
Three times in the month of January, a Gael has won WCC Player of the Week (Logan Johnson, Jan. 3 and Alex Ducas, Jan. 24). Saint Mary's breaks a tie with Gonzaga and BYU for most individual player of the week winners in the conference this season.
The Gaels return to the road next week as they kick off the first week of February by traveling up to Portland to take on the Pilots in their first and only meeting during the 2021-22 regular season. Saint Mary's will head to Portland for the first time since 2018 and have not lost at the Chiles Center since 2011. The Gaels have won their last three road games in WCC play after losing to BYU, with their most recent road game coming this week when Saint Mary's came from behind to beat San Francisco 72-70. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm and will be televised on NBC Sports California.
