WHERE IT BEGAN *2
A couple of Gaels student-athletes have had breakout moments in the Gem State, including one inside the Mountain America Center. A year ago, Andrew McKeever had his first true breakout performance for the Gaels inside the Mountain America Center against Boise State. Then just a redshirt freshman playing in his sixth collegiate game, McKeever played 25 minutes in the overtime thriller with the Broncos, spelling both Mitchell Saxen and Harry Wessels, both in foul trouble. The big man finished as the Gaels third leading scorer and their leading rebounder, accounting for six of their 10 offensive boards in the contest.
Another Gael with Idaho ties is current redshirt freshman Liam Campbell. Campbell prepped at Owyhee High School in Meridian, Idaho, which finished as the top ranked prep program in the state according to Maxpreps in his senior year of 2024. The 6-4 shooting guard was the #1 prep plater out of the state of Idaho in the class of 2024 according to ESPN. After redshirting last year at Saint Mary's, this will be Campbell's first time playing in his home state since winning the 2023-24 IHSAA 5A State Title as a high school senior.
ABOUT THE BRONCOS
Off to their fourth straight season of seven wins or better in their first 10, the Boise State Broncos will enter Sunday's matchup in Idaho Falls with a 7-3 record. Head Coach Leon Rice is now in year 16 at the helm of the Boise State program, having notched 323 wins, 12 20+ win seasons, five NCAA tournament berths and two Mountain West Titles in his illustrious career. This year's Bronco team was picked to finish third in the preseason Mountain West Poll, behind San Diego State and Utah State, despite the graduation of the program's all-time leading scorer, Tyson Degenhart. After a tumultuous start, losing to DII opponent Hawaii Pacific in their opener, the Broncos have rebounded to win seven of their next nine contests. Boise State does not have one true "go-to" scorer, but rather has a quartet of starters averaging between 11 and 14 points per game. Two of those names, Andrew Meadow (12.7 PPG, 45.9% 3pt) and Javan Buchanan (12.4 PPG, 5.2 RPG), should be familiar to Gaels fans, as those two combined for 19 points on 6-10 shooting in the matchup a year ago. Meanwhile, Drew Fielder (13.6 PPG, 5.4 RPG) and Dylan Andrews (11.5 PPG, 4.4 APG) transferred in from Georgetown and UCLA respectively, and have made instant impacts for the Broncos in the early part of the 2025-26 campaign. This meeting will be the 16th all-time between the Gaels and Broncos, with the Broncos leading it 10-5.
