PALO ALTO, Calif. – Saint Mary's Men's Tennis had a doubles tandem in the ITA Super Regionals, and the combo of
James Watt and
Thibaud Maxant has advanced all the way to the semifinals.
Â
Watt and Maxant defeated John Kim and
Michael Wright of Cal 8-4 to start the day in the seven-seed-versus-eight-seed matchup. That set up a showdown with Stanford's No. 3 tandem of Max Basing and Nishesh Basavareddy, who shut out their opponents from Portland 8-0.
Â
But Watt and Maxant were undaunted by facing the top-five tandem of the Cardinal, and bested Basing and Bsavareddy 8-6 in a fierce battle for the win over the doubles stars from Stanford.
Â
The victory over the No. 3 doubles combo means the Gaels tandem will now take on the No. 1 pairing of Quinn Vandecasteele and Joshua Charlton of Oregon on Sunday morning. Vandecasteele and Charlton topped a doubles team from Gonzaga 8-5 to reach the semis.
