MBB | Mahaney Snags Second WCC Freshman of the Week Award

SAN MATEO, Calif. — For the second time this season, Aidan Mahaney has been better than the rest of his young counterparts in the West Coast Conference. Just announced by the conference office, Mahaney has been named the WCC's Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, and his first weekly award since the opening week of the year.
Mahaney scored double-digits in both games for Saint Mary's this week, against New Mexico (11) and No. 1 Houston (14). While both were losses, Mahaney helped keep the Gaels in both games in different ways. On Wednesday against New Mexico, he was less of a threat from distance (just one made-three pointer), but was more efficient from the floor (4-9 FG). In the five-point loss against the top-ranked Cougars, Mahaney caught fire in the second half, making three of his four triples in the second stanza, and finishing the game 4-8 from that range. Mahaney also added six assists and five rebounds for the week.
With the award win, Mahaney becomes the first freshman at Saint Mary's to win the award multiple times in a single season. He is also the first freshman in the WCC this year to win the award for the second time.
As it was when he first won the award after week one, Brandin Podziemski of Santa Clara was named the WCC's Player of the Week.
The Gaels return home a midweek contest against Missouri State on Wednesday, December 7 at 7:00 pm. That will be the lone home game of the week, as the Gaels will then take on their second ranked opponent of the season in No. 24 San Diego State on Saturday afternoon on a neutral floor in Phoenix. Saturday's game against the Aztecs is the Gaels first game in the 2022 Jerry Colangelo Classic, with a return trip scheduled for December 21 against Wyoming.
