FRIDAY FIVE presents five facts about Saint Mary's teams that are in action, with things to look forward to during the upcoming week.
1. PINK T-SHIRTS!
Saint Mary's Women's Basketball plays at home on Saturday afternoon against No. 20 BYU, and the first 500 fans will receive a free pink SMC t-shirt, courtesy of University Credit Union. The remainder of the schedule is full of promotions, including a Gnome giveaway, a red-out, and Senior Night on February 24 against Pacific.
2. SOFTBALL SEASON
Saint Mary's Softball begins the 2022 season this weekend at the NorCal Kickoff, hosted by Sacramento State and UC Davis. The Gaels play five times over the weekend, including their first two games of the year against the Montana Grizzlies. The Gaels bring back three All-WCC players from one season ago, including Indya Smith, who was named First Team All-WCC for the first time in her career last year.
3. ALL THE TOURNAMENTS
Gaels Softball begins the season with five tournaments over the first five weekends of the season, all on the road. Saint Mary's will head to San Diego in week two, Santa Clara in week three, Fort Collins (Colorado) in week four, and Riverside in week five. This stretch of the season will encompass 23 of their first 25 games of the 2022 season, with two midweek games in the Bay Area sprinkled in between.
4. RANKED IN RED
Saint Mary's Men's Basketball became ranked in both the AP and the Coaches Top-25 Polls on February 7, the first time since November 11, 2019 that the Gaels found themselves as a ranked program. Both polls had the Gaels as the No. 22 team in the country. Since being ranked for the first time in 1958, the Gaels are 86-36 while playing as a ranked team.
5. NUMBER TWO
All eyes are set on Gaels Men's Basketball taking on No. 2 Gonzaga on Saturday night in Spokane, the first time these two teams have met this season. The Gaels will enter the game as underdogs, but this is the first time these teams play each other while both are inside the rankings since 2018. Gonzaga plays with the second quickest tempo in the country, while the Gaels are one of the slowest, making this an intriguing matchup of two conference powerhouses.
