MORAGA, Calif. — Former Saint Mary's great Patty Mills will be participating in the NBA's 3-Point Contest. Mills will be the first Gael to ever take part in the 3-Point Contest, and is the first Australian-born player selected for the event.
Hailing from Australia, Mills played two impressive years for the Gaels from 2007-2009, electing to take part in the NBA Draft process after his sophomore season. His leadership and success here earned him his number being retired by the school in 2015.
His shooting and defense that have brought him success in the NBA was certainly on display at the collegiate level, as he averaged 16.4 points per game over his two seasons and two steals per game. His 57 steals in both his freshman and sophomore year are both still tied for the 4th most ever in a season in Saint Mary's history. Mills earned a host of awards during his two seasons, including WCC Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-WCC.
Mills' professional career began in 2009 as the 55th overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers. After his first two seasons with Portland where he saw minimal time on the court, he was picked up by San Antonio and showed the world what he can do. In his 10 seasons with the Spurs, he shot over 37% from three-point land in nine of them. He also played a key role in the Spurs 2014 championship season, including a 17-point performance in the decisive game five against Miami to give San Antonio their fifth all-time championship.
This past offseason, the Brooklyn Nets signed Mills to a 2-year, $12 million dollar deal. Mills has blossomed in this opportunity, as he is posting career highs in nearly every statistical category and has helped put his name and Saint Mary's College on the map. His impressive play has earned him an invitation to this year's 3- Point Contest. His 42.0% three-point shooting this season will be the highest in the field of superstars taking part in the contest. He also is third in the NBA this season in three-pointers made per game.
NBA All Star weekend will take place from Friday, February 18 to Sunday, February 20. The weekend of festivities celebrating the best of the best will include the Celebrity All-Star Game, the Rising Stars Game, the Skills Challenge, the 3-Point Contest, the Dunk Contest, the G League Next Gen Game, and finally the All-Star Game on Sunday evening. Catch Mills take place in the second of three events Saturday night, beginning at 5 p.m. PT on TNT.
