LIHU'E, Kaua'i – Saint Mary's Golf concluded day one of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in fifth place out of 18 teams, after an up-and-down day still saw them finish in the upper half of the field and with two golfers in the top 15 of 102 players.
Mitchell Hoey finished round one 4-under par and tied for eighth place and Michael Slesinski is tied for 13th at 3-under par. Hoey already has seven birdies and he and Slesinski have each made an eagle. Slesinksi is 4-under on par fives, Hoey is 1-under par in par threes, and Zack Missigman has made par 13 times.
The Ocean Course at Hokuala has been completely re-done since the Gaels last played there in February of 2020, so it's like Saint Mary's is learning a whole new course.
"Kind of a roller coast day out there in round one, but that's to be expected on this course," Head Coach Scott Hardy said. "We need to keep getting better each day we compete."
The Gaels will all tee off at 8:30 a.m. on day two.
