MBB | Kuhse Named WCC Player of the Week
2/21/2022 10:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
SAN MATEO, Calif. — The late-season rise of Tommy Kuhse has been special to watch, and he was rewarded for his efforts on Monday morning. Announced by the West Coas Conference, the graduate student guard for SMC has been named the WCC's Player of the Week, making him the fifth Gael of the season to take home the award.
Kuhse led the Gaels to a perfect 2-0 week at home as they took down RV San Francisco and BYU. Kuhse played all 40 minutes in both games and was the leading scorer in both games, posting 22 and 25 points. Both represented season-bests for the graduated student, who shot 52.9% on the week from the field and went 5-11 (45.5% from three-point range). Not only was he scoring, but he was distributing, as he recorded 10 assists, including six against USF. He also grabbed nine total rebounds and had six steals. Part of his stellar performance came in the first half against BYU, where he scored 20 points in the first 20 minutes.
Kuhse was also named ESPN's Player of the Week by Jeff Borzello, featuring him in the weekly College basketball Power Rankings posted to ESPN every Monday morning. Over Kuhse's past five games, he is averaging 18.4 points and 4.6 assists while shooting 43.5% from three-point range.
Saint Mary's now owns five WCC Player of the Week awards from the conference, the most of any school in the WCC. The last time five different players won the award in a single season for SMC was 2007-08 season when Patty Mills, Diamon Simpson, Tron Smith, Todd Golden, and Ian O'Leary took home a combined eight award wins. This is also the first time Kuhse has won the award in his career.
The final week of the regular season is in front of SMC, with one road game and one home game left before the postseason begins. The Gaels head to San Diego on Thursday night for their final road game of the regular season before coming back home for their biggest game of the season. Saint Mary's hosts No. 1 Gonzaga on Saturday night at 7:00 pm for Senior Night and the final home game of the year. Saint Mary's lost by 16 on the road to Gonzaga two weeks ago.
