FRIDAY FIVE – March 11
3/11/2022 2:00:00 PM | Baseball, General, Men's Basketball, Women's Rowing
FRIDAY FIVE presents five facts about Saint Mary's teams that are in action, with things to look forward to during the upcoming week.
1. CHONG CRUSHING
Few hitters in the NCAA have been as hot as Nathan Chong. The Gaels slugger was just named the WCC's Player of the Week after going 11-15 one week ago with 12 runs batted in. After Tuesday's game against Sacramento State, Chong finished the day with the highest batting average in the NCAA amongst hitters with at least 20 at bats.
2. TEST TIME
Saint Mary's Baseball is off to the best start in program history, with a 12-1 record through the first 13 games, but their biggest test of the season is this weekend. The Gaels head to Greenville, North Carolina to take on the defending AAC-champion East Carolina Pirates in a three-game series. East Carolina has made 31 NCAA Regional appearances and finished inside the top-15 in all six postseason polls last year.
3. RETURN TO WATER
After a few practice competitions early in the spring semester, Saint Mary's Rowing is ready to get back to work with their first official race of the spring. The Gaels will head to Folsom to take part in the Sacramento State Invite, the first of two weekends where the Gaels will race in a Sacramento State-hosted event. This begins a six-race spring semester for SMC, which will conclude with the WCC Championship on May 14.
4. WHERE WILL THEY GO?
Saint Mary's Men's Basketball is in line for what could be the best NCAA Tournament seeding in program history. In the latest ESPN Bracketology, Saint Mary's is slotted as a No. 6 seed, which would be the best seed for any Gaels team before. At their peak, the Gaels have been a No. 7 seed twice: in 2012 and in 2017. Saint Mary's has won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament in three of their last five trips.
5. SELECTION SUNDAY
Saint Mary's is hosting an NCAA Selection Show watch party on Sunday, March 13, beginning at 2:00 pm. Admission is free, the Pavilion Plaza will be up and running with beer and wine, concessions, music, and cornhole. Selection Sunday begins inside University Credit Union Pavilion at 3:00 pm as the Gaels find out their spot in the NCAA Tournament. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free "Gritty Not Pretty" t-shirt.
