SAN FRANCISCO — Saint Mary's Track ran at the Johnny Mathis Invitational on Saturday, starting in the morning and racing into the afternoon. It wasn't a large contingent of Gaels, but those that did race at San Francisco State on Saturday shined, setting some strong marks in a very crowded field of competitors.
Â
A lot of action took place in the 1500m for the men, where
Blaine Reynolds was the star of the show. He finished in fifth place overall as he finished in less than four minutes for the first time in his collegiate career, posting a time of 3:58.87. 17 total Gaels ran the 1500m, with 10 of those 17 finishing inside the top-10 overall Two Gaels scored wins in their respective heats of the 1500m:
Thomas Osborne (4:04.37 in heat five) and
Luke Bland (4:16.21 in heat three).
Anthony Vazquez (4:00.97),
Curtis Volf (4:01.55), and
Derek D'Amelia (4:03.01) all earned points for the Gaels.
Â
Raphael Lobo was the lone other male Gael to race on Saturday, and he ran in the 800m. His time of 2:09.11 was a personal best, and it was enough to win the first heat of the 800m by nearly two seconds.
Â
Most of the women that competed ran in the 1500m, with three Gaels taking their turn across two heats. Dani Rowlison made her first appearance of the 2022 track season after returning from injury, and she was the leading Gael in the 1500m. The freshman out of England finished in third place in her heat with a time of 4:59.44, finishing within one second of second place.
Aushmitha Grewal also ran in that heat and finished with a time of 5:01.77, good for sixth in the heat.
Alyssa Escay was in the fourth heat, and her time of 5:00.73 was fast enough to land inside the top-five.
Â
Escay ran multiple times on the day, also finishing inside the top-20 overall in the 800m with a time of 2:31.26.
Trinity Santana was the lone other female Gael to run, competing in the 3000m steeplechase and finishing in sixth place with her time of 12:09.06, her second-highest overall finish in the event this year.
