MBB | Gaels Release Complete 2022-23 Schedule

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's Men's Basketball has released its complete 2022-23 schedule, the team announced on Tuesday afternoon. As of this publication, the Gaels have 14 non-conference games, with nine of those games scheduled inside University Credit Union Pavilion, in addition to their 16 West Coast Conference games. The announcement of the schedule comes in conjunction with the WCC releasing dates for conference matchups.

The 2022-23 season officially begins on Monday, November 7 with a home contest against Oral Roberts at a to-be-determined time. The game is part two of a Saint Mary's basketball doubleheader on Nov. 7, with Saint Mary's Women's Basketball hosting Nevada at 5:30 pm. The season begins with five-consecutive home games before the Thanksgiving holiday, spanning from Nov. 7-19.

Included on that homestand are against Vermont (Nov. 10), North Texas (Nov. 13), Southern University (Nov. 16) and Hofstra (Nov. 19). Those teams have a combined 15 NCAA Tournament appearances, including Vermont's 2022 appearance, North Texas's Round of 32 berth in 2021, and a Sweet 16 run by Oral Roberts in 2021.

The Gaels will leave University Credit Union Pavilion for the first time on November 23-24 when they take part in the Paycom Wooden Legacy, hosted at the Anaheim Convention Center Arena. SMC will play Vanderbilt in the opener of the tournament, with the winner playing in the championship game on Thanksgiving night at 9:30 pm. This marks the fourth time the Gaels will be playing in the Wooden, with their most recent appearance coming in 2017.

Another neutral-site highlight on the schedule includes a trip to Fort Worth, Texas, where the Gaels will take on the Houston Cougars on December 3. Houston sports one of the top teams in the NCAA, making it to the Elite Eight last season before falling to Villanova. Houston was also part of last year's Maui Jim Maui Invitational, but the two teams did not meet. The December 3 contest will be the first between the Cougars and Gaels since December 13, 1996, when Saint Mary's beat Houston 72-65 at the BYU Cougar Classic.

Saint Mary's will make two trips to the Footprint Center in Arizona during the non-conference slate, with two appearances in the Jerry Colangelo Classic. First, the Gaels will play San Diego State on December 10 on the first night of the event. This marks the third year in a row the Gaels and Aztecs will meet, and the second year in a row inside the Footprint Center. SMC heads back on December 21 to take on First Four participant Wyoming. Fans will recall that Wyoming lost to Indiana in the First Four last season, before Indiana then lost to the Gaels in the NCAA Tournament.

Additional home non-conference games for the Gaels include New Mexico (Nov. 30), Missouri State (Dec. 7), New Mexico State (Dec. 14), and Colorado State (Dec. 18). This marks the second year in a row that Missouri State will play inside University Credit Union Pavilion, and the return of Colorado State starts a home-and-home with the Rams, after the teams have played each other in consecutive seasons.

Conference play begins on December 29 against San Diego as the Gaels open up with three of their first four games at home. The lone road game sandwiched in between is a road game on New Year's Eve at Santa Clara. Saint Mary's will host Portland (Jan. 7), Loyola Marymount (Jan. 12), and Santa Clara (Jan. 21) in the month of January. January 7 and 21 will feature doubleheaders with the women's basketball team.

One of the biggest stretches of the season begins on January 28, when the Gaels play their lone game of the week in Provo against BYU. This will be the final time Saint Mary's heads to BYU in WCC play, with the Cougars set to leave the conference following the season. SMC returns home for two of the biggest rivalry games of the year, with San Francisco coming to town on February 2, and Gonzaga arriving for February 4. Saint Mary's beat both teams in the final two weeks of the regular season last year to help vault them into the NCAA Tournament.

The home schedule wraps up in late February as the Gaels host BYU on the 18th, and then Pacific on the 23rd for what will serve as Senior Night for SMC. This marks the first time that Pacific and Saint Mary's will play since the Gaels Senior Night in 2021. After the final home game of the year, the regular season concludes with a trip to Spokane between the Gaels and Zags, the second year in a row the two teams end the regular season against each other.

Saint Mary's has a total of 17 home games scheduled for the 2022-23 season, and the Gaels will aim to extend their home winning streak beyond 18 games. They are just one win away from tying the longest home winning streak in program history (19), set between 2010 and 2011. It is also tied for the fifth-longest active home winning streak in the NCAA behind Gonzaga (67), Texas Tech (21), Arizona (19), and Kentucky (19).
